Red Helmet These sea shells are shallow sandy bottom dwellers and feed
mainly on sea urchins and starfish. The Red Helmet is also known as
Bull-mouth Helmet. They are sometimes used for cameos.
The cameo is a carving in relief, originally done in colored layers of
gemstone. However, most sea shells have three distinct layers of calcium
carbonate that are often different colors. These shells were discovered to have
layers of strongly contrasting colors and the shells were large enough to be
perfect for carving cameos.
