Right hand whelk seashells are white or tan with brown smudges. The body whorl is large with a crown of spikes Lines run down the entire length of the body and elongated canal. The aperture is oval with a thin outer lip.
These right hand whelks are usually found offshore from North Carolina to central east Florida. Sometimes they can be found on the sea shore when the tide is low.
Whelk seashells are in the family melongenidae. They are carnivores.
