Sputniks are real dried sea urchins. Before these creatures are dried they have prickly looking spines that resemble a hedge hog. The movable spines are used for locomotion and protection. Once they are dried the spines are removed and the sputnik sea urchin looks like the picture. They're often used in wood turning projects where the crafter creates beautiful oranaments you can use all year.
