Polished heavy cockle clams are thick, durable and heavy.  These purple sea shells can be found from southern California to the Bering Sea. The age of a cockle clam is determined by counting winter growth checks on the shell. Cockles average three to four years of age and are usually are not more than seven years old. Age of maturity is two years.
